  1. Three political systems and concepts in action in this news brief are presidential democracy, dictatorship, and republic . The article about Tom Harkin represents presidential democracy. Mr. Harkin has decided not to run for a sixth term in office .Egypt’s government represents a dictatorship.Around 800 people have died due to the riots and protests against Mr Mubarak’s dictatorship. The Czech republic represents a republic. Miloš Zeman won an election based on popular vote. He beat Karel Schwarzenberg with a 54.8% to 45.2% margin. Drew Western wrote that“The measure of a government is wether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I agree with the ideas represented in this quote. The purpose of any government is the protect it’s people and ensure that the future will be prosperous. Based on my resources I don't believe that all governments are fulfilling their duties. The uproar in Egypt is what convinces me of this. “not a single policeman has been jailed for killing any of the 800-odd people who lost their lives for protesting against Mr Mubarak’s dictatorship.” If the government is “protecting” the people, then there would be punishment for those who have done wrong. Just because some governments aren't fulfilling their duties doesn't mean that all of them aren't. Guatemala’s civil war, was a war which ran for 36 years. It is estimated that 200,000 people were killed during the conflict. Some of the worst butchery took place in 1982 and 1983, during the dictatorship of Efraín Ríos Montt, an army general who was in charge for 17 months. On January 28th a Guatemalan court ruled that he should stand trial for genocide and crimes against humanity. The government is now stepping to the plate to protect their people and make it know that there are consequences for their actions.

    Video
    1) After watching the video, I learnt that bureaucratic socialism is socialism but stricter and has more regulation. In socialism, the government regulates the distributions of necessities. There are also many different types of communism. In Russian Communism, the government takes your products from you, and I don’t know if this was meant to be a joke, but in Cambodia, the government forcefully takes your property and kills you.

    Summarizing Article - Article B
    2) This article was about how freedoms are affected by a country’s ruler. Most people believe that freedom must always come with democracy. Other people believe that it doesn’t. Older generations think that government might one day think they can represent the majority, leading to a decrease of personal liberties. The people who think that freedom and democracy don’t go hand in hand believe that freedom is literally “the lack of restriction on how we act.” The author of the article respects the opinion by agreeing upon the literal term for liberty. The way the older generations think of ‘liberty’ is very precise and they emphasis how important liberties are for people. The democracy now, according to the author, limits many freedoms of the citizens, which is why the older generation (and the author) believe that it’s important to know what freedom really is. The author understands how freedom works and it’s not just the tyrants that threaten people’s liberty, but “organised crime, ethnic conflict and militant sectarian groups” affect it also. The author provides many examples of how people’s freedoms have been restricted by providing examples of governments that are currently oppressing their citizens’ freedoms. The author believes that to truly experience a strong democracy, a person must know what freedom really is and if the government is implementing it.
    3) I believe that a true democracy can be the best form of government, but as of now, there is no true democracy. In the United States now, many people’s rights and freedoms have been ignored by the government and people are satisfied with their way of life. I agree with the author of the article when they say that people have to know what freedom means to know what it feels like because people have to know what the government is depriving them of, and they have to stand up to the government to make a change.
