A.) In this news brief, the political systems of the Czech Republic, America, and China are represented. They are presidential democracy, presidential democracy and communism, respectively.
B.) Comparing the two articles, Break for the Border and At the Highest Level, the political systems of the United States and the Czech Republic are similar in many ways. For the first time in the country, president Milos Zeman was elected by direct popular vote. Similarly, the President of the United States is elected by direct popular vote, as well. Unlike the Czech Republic’s and United States’ democratic political system, China is more Communistic. The political and economic power in China is consolidated into a single system.
C.) A New York Times columnist, Drew Westen, once stated that the measure of government is whether it helps create prosperity for many, security for all and a better future for our children. I agree with him because I feel that one of the government's main roles is to provide a better future for all generations in all aspects of life.
D.) I feel that many governments in the modern world are not fulfilling their roles. In the article, Break for the Border, the President of the United States was accused of acting unconstitutionally. Despite providing a better future for all generations, a government should also be able to accept the rules and limitations placed before them. The article, Journalistic Hackers, also reveals the lack of government involvement in fulfilling their roles. Despite breaking the record for the second time in two weeks, Chinese government has not done much to drastically reduce the amount of pollution. The lack of government involvement and fulfillment of their roles constitutes for the weakening of future generations.

In this news brief, there were several nations mentioned that each were a part of different political systems. In Brazil this past week, there was a lethal fire which began in a crowded nightclub in Santa Maria. In order to prevent future fires like this past one, the Brazilian president began the initiative to increase fire safety standards. Because Brazil has a president, I can infer that Brazil is a republic. I was able to identify that Australia has a parliamentary democracy in place because the brief stated that the country’s Prime Minister set a date for an election this past week. One last political system that I was able to identify was the United States as a Presidential Democracy due to the secretary of state approval by the U.S.’s Senate for John Kerry.
Top news this week all seemed to be happening near the Middle East region of the world. Between Egypt’s new transitional democracy and Syria’s corrupt dictatorship, nations throughout the western hemisphere are undergoing extreme political change. Also in the western part of the world, the partial contemporary monarchy of Japan announced that there would be a .8% increase in their defense spending budget due to a territorial dispute with China. In news closer to the United States, the WTO announced to Antigua that they would be allowed to sell downloads of American media without payment. On top of that, the Bahamas put a halt to illegal betting in “web shops” because voters voted against an idea to legalize and allow gambling.
I believe that the quote, “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” is a pretty accurate description on my views of the purposes of government. If I were to change this quote, I would add in the idea that the government is supposed to protect God-given human rights as well as any others requested by the nation’s citizens. I would also make it clear that these purposes would only apply to citizens of that country because it wouldn’t be fair to offer these “perks” to those who are illegal immigrants, in my opinion. Government is an institution that is meant to make its people safe and with those guidelines, that could assist in ensuring citizens’ happiness.
Based on these resources, I think that many governments are maintaining or improving their roles and duties towards their people. For example, in Australia, a parliamentary democracy is in place which allows citizens to have a say in how their country is run, but also has elected officials who are able to look out for the country as a whole when a controversial issue is brought up. On the other hand, there are totalitarian, communist countries such as North Korea where the government controls all aspects of public and private life through censorship and propaganda. Although there are many political systems in place in countries where a government isn’t fulfilling their political duties, it is becoming more and more popular for countries to listen to the people rather than having one all-powerful ruler. Once governments start to take into consideration citizens’ opinions, the only direction their political success can go is up.

    1. I agree with Juliana's opinion that the government should protect citizens' God-given rights and any other rights that are requested by the nation's citizens. Without human rights citizens would not be able to live a fulfilling life. Also citizens should have a say in the rights that they are given because only they know what will help improve their lives.

    2. I agree with Juliana that the Government should protect the rights of its citizens. I also agree that the "perks" of being a citizen of a nation should not be offered to illegal immigrants.

    A) The news articles featured Brazil, Guatemala and Antigua who's political systems are Presidential Democracy, Presidential democracy and Parliamentary Democracy respectively.
    B) Since all these countries were democratic the trends were about the same , in brazil there was a president who promised to help his country , in Guatemala through a jury and judge there was a sentencing for the wrong doings of the prior dictator, and the Bahamas ended illegal betting in online stores due to voting which is a democratic process.
    C) "The measure of a government is wether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children."
I agree with this quote because the main role of government is in fact to keep the people safe and to safeguard our freedom while allowing us to keep our freedoms which has been tested by many different political systems but never properly achieved , communism protected safety and security , Democracy highlights on the ability to prosper but at some points infringes on freedom.
    D) To an extent Modern Political systems are in fact attempting to fulfill these duties , for example in brazil the president promised to improve safety standards which would in fact lead to there safety in the future, steps like these are those which will in the future lead to the safety for all.

In this week’s news brief many different nations were mentioned for events that happened during the course of the week. Each nation has it’s own unique political systems. In Brazil a night club packed with people went up in flames killing 235 people and making this one of Brazil’s most lethal fire in the last 50 years. President Dilma Rousseff has made a promise to improve and enforce fire safety standards. The political system I feel fits best with Brazil is a republic or presidential democracy. The reason I feel this way is because of the presence of a president. Big news in the Czech Republic as the first elected president by direct popular vote was voted in. The Czech Republic can now be considered a presidential democracy as well. In Australia a prime minister set a date for the election in September. We can infer that Australia is a parliamentary democracy because of the prime minister.
Political trends in the world this week have to deal with elections and improvements to each nation. Brazil officials prepare to take action on fire safety laws, France is looking to enforce same sex marriages, and the Czech Republic’s president was elected for the first time by popular vote.
The quote “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” means that the government can judge it’s effectiveness by the wealth, safety, and advances made for it’s people. I agree with this quote because I feel the job of a government should be to focus on the well being of its people. I also believe that a government should focus the most on a better future for the children because they will be the ones eventually running and taking places in the government in the future.
Based on these resources I believe that governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles. An example from the news brief that I feel works best with this opinion is the night club fire in Santa Maria, Brazil. The government has acknowledged that more fire safety regulations have to be put into effect to ensure the safety of future events in the nation and they are taking responsibility for it. Once citizens see that the government is taking precautions to provide better safety they will feel better about their safety and know their government is doing a good job.

  5. A. This article has a brief summary of several countries and their current, political events which give the readers an idea of what type of government system each country has:
    1) The Czech Republic could be considered a transitional democracy because the article states that for the first time, the country’s president was elected by popular vote, rather than a parliamentary democracy.
    2) Singapore could be considered a republic or oligarchy because the current ruling party (representatives of the people) “suffered an unusual defeat in a by-election”.
    3) Italy can be considered a parliamentary democracy or republic because they have a prime minister, and a prime minister is the head of an elected government. In the article, the former prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, made a favorable comment about Mussolini at a ceremony he was not invited to.

    B. This article talks mostly about individual rights and political reforms in several countries. People in France are protesting for pro-gay rights so the assembly will pass a bill that legalizes gay marriage. In other countries like the Czech Republic, the government is transitioning into more of a democracy by allowing a direct presidential vote. It seems like universally, more people are gaining rights and a voice in government or attempting to change a significant aspect in government. Like the turmoil in Egypt might lead to a “collapse” if the violence continues.

    C. The purpose of government is to protect the rights of its people, and secure everyone’s livelihood. It should only get involved in the economic aspect of its country when the economy is threatening to collapse. It doesn’t necessarily have to create prosperity for many and better the lives of our children because that should be the job of the people, not the government.

    D. The Government’s around the world are doing a relatively decent job at fulfilling their roles. In Brazil, the president is working to reform fire safety laws and enforce them. In the Czech Republic, citizens are voting for their president. These governments are allowing more direct participation in government for the people and trying to protect to livelihood of its people. Although some county’s are in turmoil, like Egypt where adversaries of Egypt‘s Islamic government are clashing; they are still working to settle their feuds in order to preserve their states from collapsing. Overall, governments are fulfilling their duties and obligations in order to protect its people.

A)There were many different countries that were mentioned in the news brief. Australia, Czech Republic and the United States are three countries that are mentioned. Australia has a Monarchy system and Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister. Czech Republic has a Presidential Democracy system. In the news brief, it states that it was the first time that Czech Republic’s president was elected by direct popular vote. Milos Zeman received 55% beating his opponent, Karel Schwarzenberg. The United States also has a Presidential Democracy system. John Kerry, President Obama’s new secretary of state won ninety four votes to three.

B)There are several political trends in the modern world. Brazil and Guatemala had similar tragedies that ended up killing the lives of many. In Brazil, many young students either were killed or injured because of a fire that broke out in a nightclub. Many students died from smoke inhalation and asphyxiation. In Guatemala, Mr Rios Montt is being charged for killing 1,771 indigenous lxil people who were killed from 1982-1983 in fifteen massacres.

C)Drew Western wrote “The measure of a government is whether is helps create prosperity for many, security for all and a better future for our children”. The purpose for government is to provide stability and order for citizens. If the government is not doing its job, it will not benefit lives. Citizens could possibly start riots or other sorts of conflicts if they don’t agree with the government.

D)Governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles and duties. In France, parliament debated on a law to legalize gay marriage on January 29th. This law would allow gay couples to marry and adopt. Parliament is taking the action of holding two weeks of debate. The law is most likely to pass, making gay marriage legal. After the fire breaking out in the nightclub that killed many teens, the president of Brazil promised to improve fire-safety standards and enforce them. The nightclub needs to improve on their emergency procedures so future fires will be avoided.

    A) This week the news article reflected the ideas of these four government systems. Presidential Democracy, Parliamentary Democracy, Dictatorship and communism.
    B) Life in Egypt has not found any relief. Just recently at least 50 people were killed because of opposition. The country is at risk of collapsing if the violence does not stop. French troops in Mali captured Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu but are now facing guerrilla redoubts. The UN refuge agency suspects more than 700,000 Syrian’s have fled the country because it is being destroyed “bit by bit”. Israeli jets hit an arms deal shipment in Syria however the media claim it was a research facility. Obama and congress want to increase border security even though both groups have separate ideals. The Senate approved of John Kerry’s nomination as secretary of state after Hilary Clinton steps down. The New York Times accused Chinese hackers of infiltrating on their system using methods “associated with the Chinese military”. South Korea launched its first satellite to record climate however there is suspicion of nuclear missiles after North Korea launched their satellite last year. Japan said its spending would increase by 0.8% this year because of a skirmish with China over uninhabited land. Air pollution was so bad it broke records for the second time in two weeks. 235 people died at a nightclub after the largest fire in 50 years broke out in Brazil. A judge in Guatemala ordered Efraín Ríos Montt to stand trial for his crimes against humanity for killing 1,771 Mayans during his dictatorship. In the Ukraine Oleksiy Pukach, a former police official was serve life in prison for killing a journalist investigating corrupt cops. In Cumbria a plan to store nuclear waste underground was voted down. Many pro-gay supporters gathered in Paris just as the French council began to discuss to legalize same sex marriage. A similar trend seems to be a social change throughout nations. People are becoming more advanced and accepting more into society.
    C) "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I agree with the quote. A government should be looking out for the success, happiness and security of its people. A government should be able to achieve this in order to gain support from the generations of people it is placed over.
    D) Based on various sources only some governments are properly fulfilling their role. For example Rwanda is showing great progress with Transitional Democracy. England is also stable and thriving practicing Parliamentary Democracy. Yet others countries have not been so lucky. Cuba is still stuck with a dictator and North Korea along with China are facing communism. Prosperity is not being spread and the futures aren't looking any better for generations ahead.

A)Identify at least three political systems and concepts in action in this news brief.
Some of the political systems that were mentioned in this news brief were Dictatorship, Presidential Democracy, and Parliamentary Democracy. Australia and Japan are examples of countries that follow a parliamentary democracy form of government. The United States and Czech Republic have a presidential democracy type of government, and Guatemala during 1982-1983 was under the command of a dictatorship.

B)Provide a summary of that you read identifying some political trends in the modern world.
    1. Australia’s prime mister Julia Gillard discusses the election being held on September 14, 2013. She mentions that her third term is coming to an end, and that her political party has received much criticism, even though they have improved the country economically, and lowered unemployment to about 3%.

    2. President Obama wants to create a law that’ll allow illegal immigrants to gain some legal status. However, Congress is against the proposal, and believes that the United States needs to improve its security on the borders to prevent more immigrants from entering the country illegally.

    3. Japan plans on increasing its military spending by 0.8% by the end of this year.

    4. Former Dictator of Guatemala, Efraín Ríos Montt has been charged for the deaths of 1,771 mayans. He is accused for committing crimes against humanity under his leadership, and the courts have decided that he should be held for the massacres that took place and the genocide of the Mayan people.

C)Reflect on the quote italicized above and the essential question of our first unit: What is the purpose of government
New York Times columnist Drew Western once wrote that "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I agree with the quote that the responsibility of government is to protect its people and to stimulate economic growth. The government is supposed to provide assistance and stability for its people. The people must make sure that the government doesn’t take advantage or its power to abuse their individual rights. The people must make sure that the government’s decisions benefit everyone. Government is meant to serve the people, and if it fails to complete its duties than the people have a right to take away their power.
D)Based on these resources, are governments in the modern world fulfilling their roles/ duties? Explain your answer with specific examples.
The governments of the present day have been attempting to fulfill their duties, however no political system is perfect. Each one has it’s positive and negative aspects, but as long as the people are being protected and treated fairly it should matter if the governments communism, democratic, or monarchy. All that matters is that the people are being taken care of, and if that is not the case than the people have the right to revolt against the corruption and establish a new form of government that will benefit the majority.

When Drew Western stated "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children," he provided an apt description of the basic responsibility that a government has to its people. At the very least, a government must provide safety, equality, and freedom for the citizens of the country. Recently there have been several nations in the news that have been doing just that. In Britain, a parliamentary democracy and a republic, the underground dumping of toxic waste in the north-western region of Cumbria was successfully voted against. This is a great win for the people of that area as they will not be subjected to hazardous waste that can potentially cause health problems and is also a great example of the government working to protect the people. Another example of this can be seen in the republic of France where a new bill will potentially grant marriage equality for same-sex couples. If this bill is passed it will usher in a new age of equality for the citizens of France and potentially inspire other nations to do the same. A third example of a government working to benefit its citizens in one of these three areas is that of Japan, a nation that consists of both a constitutional monarchy as well as a parliamentary democracy. Japan has recently announced that its defense budget will be increased by .8%- the first time that the defense budget has been increased in almost a decade. In all three cases, governments seem to be hard at work in order to provide citizens with what they need. While in the first two instances the decision is based upon popular vote, this is not true for the increased budget in Japan-which was decided solely by the government officials. This demonstrates that there is no specific form of government that can uphold these responsibilities better than another. Every government should, and many do, work their hardest in order to provide the people with safety, equality, and freedom.

On the front page of the online newspaper “The Economist” many political systems and concepts were spoke about. First off is the concept of checks and balances in government, this is seen is a short bit about America where not only was a new Secretary of State ratified by congress but also President Obama is taking heat for appointing three new members to the National Labor Relations Board while congress was in recess. A second system that was touched on was a military dictatorship, in the news this week a former military dictator from Guatemala to stand trial for crimes committed in 1982-1983. The third type of government referenced was a parliamentary democracy, this is the type of government seen in Australia. Australia is in the world economic news this week because the Prime Minister has stated the date for the next general election in Sept. 2013. This came as a shock when further reading made it clear that the normal practice down under is to state an election will be a few weeks away, not seven and a half months away.
While reading the economic news a trend in the modern world that became evident to me was change. Although all politicians claim to have a plan for change many rarely do. In the modern world however many leaders are now looking back on the way things used to be and trying to make things better. This was seen in Guatemala where a current president is putting a former military dictator on trial. This is also seen in Australia where a Primer Minister is for the first time ever creating a fair election that will allow the best candidate to win, not just the sneakiest candidate.
My definition of the purpose of government is very similar to the quote that was touched upon in class on Friday. Government must provide first off safety to all, government must provide a place where prosperity is everywhere, and lastly the make a better future for our children. This is exactly what the quote says and in my opinion the quote is spot on for the definition of the purpose of government.
In my opinion no government fulfills its role as explained in the aforementioned quote. The first part of the quote is very hard to attain in the modern world because of the terrible current world economy. The second part of the quote was probably best seen in the former Soviet Union where security and military build up were probably the best known qualities of the Soviet bloc. Lastly creating a better future for our children can have different definitions to everybody but to me it is exemplified in a country like France where secondary education is free. It to me shows progress and a dedication to staying a world presence.

It shows that they are focused on the future of children and are doing anything in their power to do so.

    A. This news brief described multiple political systems and concepts in action. The Czech Republic is described as a Presidential Democracy because the article states that "..the country’s president was elected by direct popular vote." China follows Communism because the article states that "In response the government shut some factories and cleared fleets of government cars from the streets," expressing that their government has control over everything. Singapore seems to be a Republic because the article states that the "..ruling party suffered an unusual defeat in a by-election," showing that their government leaders are selected by popular vote.

    B. A large portion of this article seems to speak about the Middle East and the corruption which the countries, as well as their governments, are currently facing. At least 50 people were left dead in Egypt due to opposition disputes about the Islamist government. Syria is said to "..being destroyed 'bit by bit'" while more than 700,000 Syrians have already fled from the country. Overall, this article seems to touch upon the different downfalls that many countries around the world are currently facing and the reaction of how their government is dealing with getting the country through it all. Unfortunately, for some of those countries, it is their government that put them into these situations in the first place and it is now up to the people to find a way out.

    C. While reflecting upon the quote "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children," it explains the exact purpose of a government. In many countries, people look towards their government as a higher power as to what will get them through any troubles that country may be facing as well as being what holds their future. Governments should always be one step ahead of the people, making decisions and leading them towards what will make them prosper as a whole. While making the country prosper, the government must also look towards the future and make their decision not only based on how it will currently help the people but how it will also help those in the future, that way the government will be able to always prosper, even in the future. Of course with every decision made by the government, they must also remember to secure their people and think of their safety before any decision is made final.

    D. Not all governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles/duties. China faces communism which leaves the government with all the power and say, leaving the people with no choice but to go along with whatever is said and done by the government, even if these decision lead to corruption or harm for the people. Countries like Rwanda have been improving greatly. Although the country is still very poor, their government has had a great turn around since allowing women to join their Parliament. Governments are meant to help the people as best as they can. While some governments take advantage of their power, others are actually trying to help out the people and the entire country as a whole. However, every country varies and not all governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles/duties.

A.) The article brief tells about many different countries. One article brief in particular talks about the President Muhammad Morsi inviting the position to engage in a “national dialogue” therefore this can be inferred as a Presidential Democracy. In another brief Australia was highlighted for their Prime Minister setting an election date for September 14th. Since Australia has a prime minister I can assume that they have a Parliamentary Democracy. Lastly the article brief on Brazil spoke about a deadly fire that broke out in a nightclub and killed 235 people. The President of Brazil plans to create and enforce improved fire code safety.
B.) The article of, “Scandal, fascism, and football” compares to that of “Tahrir Squandered”. “Scandal, fascism, and football” talks about the former Prime Minister of Italy creating outrage in the country. He did so by making a comment at a ceremony commemorating the victims of the holocaust. This scandal put the polls for the former Prime Ministers in jeopardy and left his political party with a lot of damage. The “Tahrir Squandered” is similar in that the citizens of Egypt are unhappy with their government and went against their President and government. The President, just like the Prime Minister in Italy, has a mess to clean up. The country is unhappy with what he is doing and he needs to do something to fix it. The President has a large responsibility and he needs to put an end to the violence that is going on his country.
C.) I agree with the quote, “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." It is an adequate statement however I agree with Julianna in which I also feel that this should apply for citizens of the country only, not people who are illegally living there. I feel that it wouldn’t be fair for illegal immigrants to be getting the same type of security and protection in a country that are not legal citizens of. It wouldn’t be fair if illegal immigrants get the same benefits as citizens who pay taxes get.
D.) I feel that the governments in the modern world are not fulfilling their duties to their citizens or their country. This is especially shown in the article, “Tahrir Squandered” because the citizens of Egypt have been unhappy with their government for a while. The President has a lot of things to do and needs to work on making the people happy again however the elections in the country keep getting pushed back which is unfair to the citizens. Seeing this and comparing it to some things in the United States makes me believe even more that the government officials aren’t upholding their duties. Citizens of the US have been unhappy with the government for a while and seems that no one is doing anything to help the way things are running. This was especially shown in the first article, “Talk About the Role of the Government”.

A.] In these News articles, the political systems of Brazil, Guatemala and Australia were mentioned. Given that Brazil has a president, Dilma Rousseff, the political system is Republic and Presidential Democracy. Guatemala has a Transitional Democracy due to Guatemala’s civil war. Australia would be labeled as a Parliamentary Democracy because they have a Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

B.] In the News Article, “A Night Of Tragedy”, Brazil experienced a fire that broke out in a nightclub. 100 people were injured, mostly young students. The fire appears to have been started by a pyrotechnic flare lit on stage by a member of the band. Police are investigating the safety precautions took to stop the fire, if any at all. In, “Never Too Late”, 86 year old Rios Montt is being prosecuted with genocide and crimes against humanity that happened under is dictatorship during Guatemala’s civil war. He served as a member of Guatemala's National Assembly, until last January which provided him with immunity against prosecution. When his term ran out he was placed on house arrest. However, he is protected by an amnesty law. In the article, “Rocking Her Own Boat”, Julia Gillard set a date for the next general election on September 14th. She made her election announcement in a speech that had been billed as an outlining her plans for the year. This caught many people off guard.

C.] I agree with the quote, "The measure of a government is wether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I feel the government tries to help people as much as the can to bring safety and stability to the people. Although, I feel that this quote should be applied to only citizens of the country.

D.] Based on these resourced, governments are fulfilling their roles to an extent. For example, In Australia, people are allowed to have a say in who to elect. They are aloud to voice their own opinions and allows freedom. However, In Guatemala, by letting criminals have “immunity against prosecution”, they are not fulfilling their roles in keeping the people safe. They are simply protecting those who are dangerous and guilty.

    A) This news brief provided a description of conflicts throughout the world and the actions being taken. In their actions, these different places reveal to the world their concepts and beliefs, as well as the type of political systems they hold. For example, Australia's prime minister set a date for an election. Being that Australia's government has a prime minister, it is evident that Australia is a parliamentary democracy. Also, in Brazil, a fire broke out in a packed nightclub, killing 235 people. The president promised to improve fire-safety standards. Because there is a president in Brazil, whom is taking action, it's inferred that Brazil is a republic. One last example of a political system mentioned can be found in the history of Guatemala, for in 1982-1983, Guatemala experienced a military dictatorship. This was mentioned because the country's ex military dictator is to stand charges of crime against humanity.
    B) The article entitled "Pink Pride in Paris" gives perspective on battles over legalizing gay marriage in France. A bill was passed in order to legalize gay partnerships, enabling people to marry freely and adopt with a person of whichever sex they are married too. However, this is being dragged out and disputed about because there are people in France who are against gay marriage and support the idea that France is Catholic by tradition. The French parliament is holding two weeks of debate, and although it is very likely gay marriage will be legalized, they are taking others' opinions into consideration. This exhibits the fact that France is a parliamentary democracy, because it is ruled by the people through elected officials, so the peoples' opinions are heard as well.
    C) Drew Western once said, "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for many, security for all and a better future for our children." In reflection of this quote, it is a true statement. How well we as citizens tend to view are government are based on how the government treats the people. If all citizens are granted economic opportunities, opportunities to save themselves, and last but not least opportunities to better their future and the futures of lives to come, the government is providing it's people to meet their needs. Although it is possible for the government to do even more to better it's people, these three aspects meet the basic needs of the people.
    D) Based on these resources, not all governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles/duties. A government is created to instill balance and provide it's people with the best lives possible. Some countries fail to meet the needs of the political system they hold. For example, Cuba and North Korea are still under dictatorship, and after experiencing past times in history such as fascist Italy and Hitler's taking over, it's evident that dictatorship and communistic rule instill more or less negative values and holds the nation back from reaching prosperity.

    A. This news article talks about Presidential democracy. One of the articles talks about President Muhammad Morsi and how he wanted the violence in his country to stop because it might cause a collapse in the state. Another article talks about Australia's prime minister Julia Gillard set a date for an election. If Australia has a prime minister it can be inferred that Australia has a Parliamentary Democracy. In another article it talks about how in Brazil 235 people died in a nightclub when a fire started. President Dilma Rousseff promised to improve fire-safety standards and to enforce them. Since Brazil has a president i can infer that Brazil is a republic.

    B. The articles that I read all have the same trends really In Brazil and Egypt they both have presidents that want to enforce laws to make their country better. In Brazil President Dilma Roussenff wanted to enforce the laws on fire safety so that more people wouldn’t get hurt and die and in Egypt President Muhammad Morsi wanted to stop the violence in his country.

    C. “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” This quote means that the government is meant to allow people to keep their freedom while keeping everyone safe at the same time. I agree with this quote because that is exactly what the government is supposed to do they are supposed keep everyone's well being in mind.

    D. With everything that I have read I think that the government is fulfilling its duties for it’s countries. The main role of government is to keep it’s people safe. For example in Brazil the president wants to make sure the fire safety rules are enforced more so that no one else in the country gets hurt like that again. The only thing I think is wrong with the government is that they seem enforce certain laws after the fact that something bad happened. I think that all laws should be strictly enforced so that tragedies like what happened in Brazil never happens.

    A) Throughout the reading several political systems can be identified. A presidential democracy can be recognized in the Czech Republic as having their first president being elected by direct popular vote. Secondly, the political system of transitional democracy can be seen in Brazil. There is currently a president; however, Brazil is still in the process of becoming a democracy. The new satellite being launched in December by North Korea is proof of their communist political system. The government regulates and makes the progress that the country is having.
    B) After reading the several briefs I noticed several political trends. All of these countries are making progress technologically. North and South Korea have recently launched satellites into orbit. Antigua has now been authorized to sell downloads of American media without payment. Next, many of these countries seem democratic as well as republic political systems. New presidents are being elected and there are many elections by the people of the world. A new president in the Czech Republic has been elected and there is currently a president in Brazil as well as the U.S.
    C) The quote previously mentioned directly reflects my views for the purpose of government. If a government provides security and a better future for everyone, it provides for continual progress, which is essential for achievement and success.
    D) As previously stated, I feel that in order for a nation’s government to fulfill its roles, it must provide for safety as well as a better future for everyone. I feel that Many nations are providing for more advancements as far as education; however, regarding safety I feel that governments are failing. In the news briefs, North Korea was said to have launched a satellite in December, which suggests progress towards building a nuclear ballistic missile. In my opinion, I do not find the possession of nuclear weaponry safe in the least. Also, according to the news brief, clashes between opponents of Egypt’s Islamist government and the security forces left at least 50 people dead in the cities od Cairo, Suez, Port Said and Ismailia. Governments around the world definitely need to provide for better safety in the world.

A&B- Summing up the political news this week, their seems to be many conflicts going on in many countries. For instance, Milo Zeman, won the Czech Republic election. This election is based on popular vote and this is the first time the Czech Republic has performed an election this. In other news, the French assembly has been discussing the chance of creating a bill that would legalize marriage. Even though there are many who are anti- gay marriage, a local poll suggest that the bill might go through because there are more people in favor of same sex marriage then there are of those who are against it. In Guatemala, Efraín Ríos Montt a military dictator in the 1980s stands on trial for crimes against humanity. Efrain Rios Montt is being charged with killing 1,771 Mayans. Czech Republic is a parliamentary government, while France is a semi- presidential government and Guatemala is a republic government.
C-"The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children” this quote reflects my views on a government. I believe that we as a country or individual need to feel as if we hold all three of these aspects. If we all prosper in life, we will be happy and work harder in life, because aspects of our life will be worth fighting for. The United States has one of the most powerful military forces in the world and for Americans we love feeling safe, when people feel threaten, their lives aren't as fulfilled. Lastly, our future, even though I will be graduating high school this year, my future is all I have. Going to college, getting job, and starting a family are what my future hopefully contains.

D- Based on the political news, Leaders in the world are doing more to fix the bad and create good in the world. Based on the news on Guatemala I was shocked to learn that a old military dictator is being charged with this crime. This happened at least 20 years ago, so why would a judge bring it to light again. I respect that some people are willing to stick their necks out in order to see justice. Times are changing and it is up to us to change the bad and continuing doing good. This also goes for the new bill in France, 10 years ago, this issue may have just been surfacing but since it is such a controversial topic now, its important that we take action. The French Assembly is aware that they can't just sit around and do nothing they need to do something and they are. As times are changing, so are the way governments work in order to fulfill new obstacles they are faced with.

    A) In these news articles there were several political systems in place. In the “A Night of Tragedy” article, a fire broke out at a nightclub in Santa Maria killing 232 people and injuring over 100 others. This tragedy caused government officials and fire department officials to come together and examine all possibilities that could of caused this tragedy. I would say that Brazil could be considered a republic or Presidential democracy because there is a President involved in the countries issues. Another example of Presidential democracy is in Guatemala, which is talked about in the article “Never too late” where a former president is being charged with genocide and crimes against humanity by a Latin American court. This court case will prove if Guatemala’s government can live up to expectations. A third political system is shown in the article “Scandal, fascism and football” which discusses an outrage caused by Silvio Berlusconi. Based on this article I would say that Italy has a parliamentary democracy because of the mention of a prime minister.
    B) In all of the articles I read each country seemed to democratic, either presidential or parliamentary. This shows that the citizens have some say in the government because they are able to appoint and vote for their government officials. Political trends this week seem to show several hardships within the countries and how the government is working towards improvement.
    C) The quote “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” means that the governments main concerns should be to secure its people and provide employment so the country and its economy can thrive.
    D) Based on these resources I would say that governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles, for example in Brazil when the country is facing a tragedy that took the lives of many people the President is being attentive and will provide any help needed, which should be happening in democracies.

Egypt's security forces became violent with opponents of the country on Egypt's populated city streets in early 2013. More than fifty people died due to this conflict. One reason that differences in beliefs lead to public violence in this part of the world is because their governments are extremely disorganized. This disorganized and apparently ineffective government may be a result of its Islamic-influenced Presidential democracy. Combining 2 different political systems may cause controversy between the government, its citizens, and the government's opponents. Another Islamic-centered country endured trouble recently when French troops invaded 3 towns in northern Mali. This intrusion may result in aggression. Syrian officials, which is also an Islamic-centered country, has informed the UN security council that their country is deteriorating bit by bit. More than 700,000 people have fled Syria due to the violence that occurs within the country. New York Times columnist Drew Western wrote that "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." This quote demonstrates the role that a government is supposed to fulfill no matter which country or region that it is governing. The current situations in Egypt, Mali, and Syria prove that their governments are not fulfilling their duties because there is no sense of security for their people. All of these countries just so happen to be in a part of the world where religion has a huge influence on the way the country is run. The country's stress on religion may also be the reason for so much conflict with other countries. The governments of these countries aren't considering the safety of their citizens, prosperity of their people, or future of their children first in their priorities, therefore these governments are not abiding to the duties that a government is supposed to fulfill.

  20. There are many political systems in the world that are designed to try to protect and help the people as much as they can as well as systems that don't quite catch the peoples thoughts. This isn't the case for Australia’s parliament democracy. The concept of Australia’s government includes a prime minister with elections for new ones as well. The article states the elected Prime minister Julia Gillard from 2010 has had a "smooth sailing" term with decently good odds to her new opponent. The article is just based on the new election and who the people most likely will go for. There are no big stories how there is controversy or how anyone is favoring one side. This shows the governmental concept of Australia is strong with fair elections as well as having a "healthy economy". Another example of a government system and concept is Israel’s cabinets that are run by ministers and a prime minister. Israel , now, is in a state of protection and awareness as the Lebanese Shia group Hizabullah attacks. This militia has attacked Israel borders for two years now. This concept of protection and attacking is critical such as the potential "game changing threats" convoys Israel recently destroyed said to be carrying surface to air missiles. Besides the battle between these to groups Israel is trying there best to not create war for the benefit of there people. Much Like Australia’s government with a Prime Minister, Israel’s Prime Minister is Benjamin Netanyahu whose motives are to keep war and particularly strong nuclear weapons out of the picture. One other example of a political system and concept is America being democratic and highly protective of its land and people. Lately President Obama has created a plan to let illegal immigrants become Americans. President Obama is looking out for his people and the newly becoming Americans. There are expensive fees and long grueling processes these people must go through but they are immune to deportation. They will pay taxes and work like any other American. Considering the idea of totally securing the United States boarders is nearly impossible President Obama is choosing to embrace the fact that they are here and understand that there are skilled professionals in the new group of Americans. Much like the other countries the American government is looking out of its people and hope to prosper from the new eleven million Americans. Many political trends I’ve been noticing is that no matter what happens the government will look out for its people because with out opportunity and protection why would anyone live there. I think the purpose of government is to support and protect the people. To reflect and lead in the peoples decision because without people the country is an empty shell. Leaders of the country would project the common voice of the people and make decisions together as a unit. Consisting of a place where all of society will aid for another in honor of being a country. I agree with the quote because it is parallel with my ideas of preserving for the future and bringing peace and wealth to the society. Today you would think because of the immense complication and foreign conflict government tends to lose sight of what is truly important but I don’t believe so. I think countries have had a tighter grip on its people, sometimes too tight such as America taking away some rights at airports for being on high alert for terrorism. Besides minor problems like that elections, opinions and values have been preserved as people and government will protect there own in the time of need. The role of government sometimes vary from being strong to weak to even corrupt but the people will reside to themselves and look for a better leader. Finally, only time will tell if people and government can coexist as a unit and as a single voice as problems continuously arise between them. E-Block

A)Egypt's Islamic government was mentioned in the article. Their government can be defined as a theocracy, and the government was fighting protesters.
The United States, a presidential democracy, is also mentioned. Actions taken were debates about future immigration reforms.
Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced when the polls for her election will occur. The Australian government can be described as a parliamentary monarchy.

    B) Protests in Egypt turn deadly as tensions rise in the nation. Protests around the nation combine for at least 40 dead. Many Egyptians oppose the new Islamic centered government, and constitution ushered in by narrowly elected President, Mr. Morsi. The president hopes to gain a stronger hold in his country, despite the failing currency, rising prices, rising unemployment, and stalling economy. The country on the verge of a revolution or coup d'e tat. Fortunately, there is hope for many Egyptians. Elections, which were delayed once before, are scheduled to occur in April. The article then proceeds to illustrate how the president can improve his nation.

C)The purpose of government first and foremost is too meet the needs and wishes of those it overrules by fair legislation, and representation by citizens. Also it must provide a fair economic environment for those who produce goods or services that are desired by many. This should be accomplished through fair laws that play no favorites. Security should concern threats at home, and abroad, but not at the expense of the freedoms of its citizens. Also, the children's of the nation future should not be hurt in anyway. A government should be a vast and encompassing entity of the desires of the citizens ruled.

    D) No, many governments are not meeting these needs. Egypt, for example, is on the verge of another revolution, with a stalled economy, and constant inflation. The ruling party also fails to resemble what most of the citizens want for their country. This government is failing at providing prosperity, security, and a future and should be changed.

    A) Presidential Democracy took place when Milos Zeman, a former prime minister, won the Czech Republic’s presidential election. In Paris citizen’s took part in protests in support of legalization of same-sex marriage. Egypt’s Islamic government is facing opposition in the country from citizens who do not support the theocracy government.
    B) In Egypt clashes between opponents of the Islamist government and the security forces left at least 50 people dead. When French troops captured 3 main towns in Mali, jihadists living there fled. In America senators are working on reaching an agreement about immigration reform. Technological growth has continued throughout the world as both South Korea and North Korea launched their first satellites into orbit. John Kerry has been nominated as new Secretary of State, and Milos Zeman won Czech Republic’s presidential election. These events show that old politicians are making their way into higher government jobs.
    C) New York Times columnist Drew Western wrote that "The measure of a government is wether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I fully agree with this quote. A government is not doing it’s job if the majority of citizens are not satisfied with how the country functions. Citizens will not be satisfied is they are not being given opportunities to prosper within economy. They will not be satisfied if they do not feel secure in their homes, cities, and countries. The government will not function properly if they leave a mess for the next generation to clean up. It is government’s responsibility to make sure the country is working towards the benefits of citizens, and future citizens.
    D) Governments in the modern world are for the most part fulfilling their roles/ duties. Most of these government are doing what they feel is best for their countries. In Brazil the government is working to make sure that fire-safety standards are improved, to save the lives of citizens. In Britain a council has voted down an underground nuclear waste site in order to make sure the country stays as green as possible, and is safe for future generations.

After reading the article on politics this week I choose Egypt as being a country that's government is republic. They are facing difficult times though because the Islamism government and security forces have been going around and killing people. They reported that at least 50 people were found dead! This is mainly happening due to how it switched from a dictatorship to a democracy. The country Israel is a parliamentary democracy, and they are becoming affected by the country of Syria which have been having a war of there own, they are saying that Israel is working on weapons of mass destruction. Syria's media have had accused Israel of test bombing on Scientific research center which has not been proven yet. Syria is rebelling against their president, and looking into trying to get chemical weapons which Israel is trying to protect people from the UN is looking in to it. Now the United States which is a democracy has the changes due to Obama causing the new people to join the senate that are going to be on his side and agree to his terms also he explained how that was George Bush problem!

    A) There are many political systems mentioned within this article. Some of them are theocracy (Egypt) presidential democracy, republic, parliamentary democracy, and dictatorship.

    B) During this reading, many countries had some sort of conflict or event taking place. In Egypt, riots are still happening leaving many dead. The president of Egypt Muhammad Morsi called for unity. The French went to war in Africa and captured several villages. Syria has also faced warfare within its own cities. Some countries, such as Brazil, face many tragedies and injustice in the country. Others deal with social reforms. Meanwhile, America is dealing with immigration laws and economic problems.

    C) All around the world, the government plays a significant role in society and incidents occurring within the country potentially affect other nations as well. The purpose of a government is to set standards in the country and provide stability for its citizens. A government should not only provide its citizens with “prosperity, security, and a better future”, but with civil liberties also. This allows people to think freely as they choose and but also safely prevents them from doing something entirely wrong. It’s like when a parent gives an order to their child because they are trying to protect them.

    D) Not all governments in the modern world are fulfilling their duties. Not all governments are perfect. Communism, for an example, maybe a perfect government in theory to some, but when put into practice, it is not as simple as Karl Marx said. Communism has led many into poverty. In North Korea during the ‘90s, many people have died because the food rationing was not enough to sustain life. The food rationing was part of communism’s belief of equality. In some cases, governments have been fulfilling their duties. For example, the United States has taken into consideration people’s concern about gun laws and safety. As a democracy, people are entitled to a voice and they are allowed to say what they feel about a certain issue. For the most part, most governments in the modern world are trying their best to fulfill their role.

    A) This article mentions various different nations.
One type of government that was mentioned was parliamentary democracy in Australia. Second was presidential democracy in the United States. Lastly, dictatorship in Guatemala during 1982-83.

    B) Australia's prime minister Julia Gillard, has set a sudden election date only a few weeks before polls. The people of Australia are appalled by her announcement and find it questioning. In the US, President Obama desires to propose laws that will benefit illegal immigrants. Congress does not agree with the President and feels more improvements in security must develop. Guatemala's dictator in 1982-83, Erfain Rios Montt, must face trials for the conviction of killing 1700 Mayans.

    C) According to Drew Western, "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I agree with this quote to an extent. However, I feel more should be added to the quote such as health and stability. Government is meant to guide a country on a safe successful path of survival. It must commit to the nation and ensure its people of security, health, and growth.

    D) I do not feel that modern governments are fulfilling their roles/duties. It seems as if they actually falsify their commitments and responsibilities to the nation. It also seems that government's mentality is turning into more of a business perspective concerned about money and money alone regardless of the inadequate circumstances of the nation. Government is leaning towards corruption rather than the greater good. Specifically, Guatemala's dictator has committed crimes of killing Mayans. The innocent lives of villagers were taken by government forces. Guatemala's government of 1982-83 took advantage of their authority and power.

    A) There were many different political systems describes in this news brief. The Czech Republic has a presidential democracy as its political system because for the first time their president was elected by direct popular vote. Also Australia has a parliamentary democracy because they have a prime minister, who just set the date for an election. Egypt has a theocracy because it has an Islamic government, which had conflicts with Egypt’s security forces.

    B) The political trends in this news brief seems to focus on increasing citizens’ role in government, and governments helping to improve citizens’ lives in general. In Australia, the prime minister set a date for an election. Also in the Czech Republic, the president was elected by popular vote. Elections are a direct way for citizens to be involved in their government. In Brazil, a lethal fire broke out and to make sure that this doesn’t happen again, the president has promised to improve fire-safety standards. China’s air pollution reached a record high. To try and decrease the air pollution, the Chinese government has shut down some factories and taken away government cars from the streets. Also Japan increased its defense military spending by 0.8% this year, which will ultimately keep Japan’s citizens safer. These government actions have improved their citizens’ health, safety and security.

    C) The quote, “The measure of a government is weather it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” relates a lot to my views on government. I agree that a government should provide security and a better future for the next generation, but I don’t believe that a government should help create prosperity for people. I believe that prosperity should come for an individual’s hard work; it shouldn’t be handed to people. I also believe that a government should protect people’s human rights because without human rights people cannot live happy or successful lives. I think that governments should also give their citizens a say in how the government is run, so that governments can know how to improve the lives of their citizens.

    D) Based on these resources, I believe that governments in the modern are fulfilling their duties. Countries such as Australia and Czech Republic are holding elections, which allow citizens to participate in government. Guatemala is charging its former dictator with humanity crimes. This is helping to make sure that the citizens of Guatemala are safe from any danger that this dictator can cause. The new fire-safety standards in Brazil are helping keep citizens and future generations safe from dangerous fire hazards. Japan’s increase in military spending is helping to increase security for its citizens.

  27. A)Two major political systems that seemed to be present in a few countries were presidential and parliamentary democracy. The article touched upon President Obama being ruled against as unconstitutional by a federal appeals court due to his bypassing of the Senate to appoint three people to the National Labour Relations Board, which shows the balance in power that a democracy aims for, even the president can face discipline.Similarly democracy appears present in Britain ( more of a parliamentary democracy), the county council in Cumbria voted against a plan to store nuclear waste underground at a local site. This action is an example of how proposed ideas of a controversial nature can be overridden despite one groups push for a decision in their favor. The third system that appeared present in this article was the autocracy and somewhat communism occurring in China. As Chinese hackers were accused of infiltrating the New York times computer system with Chinese military methods,China's government is trying to take control of the countries image in the eyes of the of the world.

    B) In this reading there appears to be several political trends going on among the modern world. There appears to be more of a movement to establish forms of democracy and republics in certain governments. For example the Czech Republic's government seems to be taking a more democratic turn as Milos Zeman was elected by direct popular vote. This was the first time the country's president had been elected by this direct vote. Guatemala also appears to be taking a more democratic role as former military dictator Efrain Rios, was ordered to stand trial on charges of crime against humanity. This action showed a similar political trend among nations as punishment is being shown to infamous dictators such as Rios and Ghadaffi, who under prior government systems were allowed to rule without provisions.

    C) Personally I believe that the purpose of government is to provide safety for it's country as well as work efficiently to be well aware of political, economical, international and social issues that may pose a threat to that country.I do agree with Drew Western's quote as well because the efforts of our modern government can ultimately determine what the world of tomorrow will look like. In a government where safety is ensured to it's people, trust is built for the nation. This can be detrimental in future affairs where the power of government and government motives will be tested.

    D) In today's modern world I believe governments are trying to fulfill their roles and duties but realistically not all of them can. For example our own U.S government is a democracy however we still face controversial situations in which the government role can be endangered such as our involvement in the Middle East. There is a difference in opinions on this issue in which any citizen may question whether the government's best interest is in protecting the country. Similarly in China there is this system of Communism which virtually can silence it's citizens. This eliminates the whole role of a government protecting it's people and allowing for a "free" society In countries such as Canada and Australia democracy (parliamentary) is a strong system that allows the government to meet it's citizens half way which ultimately allows the people to have faith in their government. When governments can find a midpoint where they can secure their nations security while enforcing mandatory provisions and respect the overall wants of citizens then they have fully fulfilled their roles.

    A) The Communist government of China is willing to postpone the activities of the factories to reduce smog pollution, allowing airport flights to resume and families to get together for the approaching Chinese New Year. France has a Parliamentary Democratic government because the article discussed about the parliament. Their action was a debate on legalizing same-sex marriage between the two wings. Guatemala is probably presidential democratic and republic government because Rios Montt was a former presidential candidate and National Assembly member, indicating that the people have the power to elect their president.

    B) In China, the Chinese government has prompt the closure of several factories temporarily to resume flights. In the news article, “France and gay marriage: Pink pride in Paris,” civilians gathered outside of the Parliament in France, awaiting the results legalizing same-sex marriage. The debate will span for two weeks. A little more than half of France supports the legalization of the bill. It has been predicted that about 5,000 amendments would be passed if the bill passes as they all are related such as legalizing surrogate motherhood. Many people believe that it is commonsense to pass the bill because it relates to marriage overall, and sexual orientations should be disregarded when pertaining to equality. Discussed in “Justice in Guatemala: Never too late,” former National Assembly member, Mr. Rios Montt is charged for a massacre thirty years ago. During the civil war, he ordered the attack on the Ixil people because supported guerilla fighters who were against the state. His position in the National Assembly protected him from any charges. Now retired, the charges are upon him, making him the first former president to be charged with genocide by a Latin American court.

    C) I agree with Drew Western’s quote “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children.” I also believe that the purpose of the government is to protect the people, bring prosperity for the whole, and better the future for coming generations. ‘To better the future’ meaning to tend to our concerns, and settle problems by making the best decisions for the general public. With prosperity, our nation will have stability and growth; it is an aspect that I think everyone tries to achieve since ancient times. However, because economic, political or social problems, the government has to protect the people by preventing conflicts and violence. The government has the power to keep peace within one’s nation on a huge scale by attending to those three points.

    D) Governments today are fulfilling their duties of those mentioned by Western. As seen in France as of recently, the legalizing of same-sex marriage has been predicted to pass because it will contribute to a better future. Marriage should be entitled to everyone regardless of sexual-orientations. The author of the article says that many young people see the legalization of same-sex marriage as commonsense. Legalizing it will be in favor of the majority which fulfills the role of the government to tend to the people’s concerns. There will be people opposing it but it has already been identified as something that should be allowed in order to be equal. In another instance, the government of Guatemala is protecting the people be justly persecuting the man behind the Ixil massacre. This Is in favor of the people and is also an act of justice by properly charging the man responsible for the crime. Their action demonstrates their responsibility for protecting the man from taking the charges on an earlier note and simply, for being the government. Even the Communist Chinese government is responsible on their part by controlling their pollution output for the benefit of their people. However, they are not always responsible for their actions. There are and have been governments that have shown to fail at fulfilling their duties, it depends on who is/are the ones governing.

    A)

-In Egypt’s Islamic government (theocracy) President Muhammad Morsi invites the opposition, who have called for a government of national unity. Egypt’s generals have warned the state that the country could collapse unless the violence is stopped.
-In the United States President Obama has to make decisions with Americas Presidential Democracy for a path to try and create a legal status for illegal immigrants.
-In the Czech Republic their president for the first time has been elected by the nations popular vote which recognizes them as a presidential democracy.

    B)

-Some slight trends that I have read in this article is that some violence have occurred in nations. Egypt with its protestors saying that the nation could collapse. French troops in Mali capturing three main towns. Israeli jets hit an arms shipment in Syria bound for Lebanon. Also a major democratic advancement in the Czech republic where their president for the first time has been elected by the nations popular vote which recognizes then as a presidential democracy.

    C)

-The quote mentioned reflects my views on government. The governments priorities should be as the quote says to create prosperity, security for everyone, and ensure a strong future. All of these traits are needed to have a strong nation and make the people happy.

    D)

-Governments in the modern world are most definitely fulfilling their duties and roles. No major decision that will effect the people can be passed in a day and by the U.S being a presidential democracy we have a strong say in what goes on anyway so the majority always wins so more people will be happy than others. We as citizens control what happens and if the government is fulfilling their duties and roles. Other nations such as North Korea which has a strict dictatorship. The people their might feel like things aren’t going correctly but they don’t have a say in government like a democracy. So overall it matters where you end up and how much of a say you have in government to determine if they are doing well.

    A) In the news brief Brazil, Guatemala and Antigua were mentioned have Presidential democracy and Parliamentary Democracy respectively.
    B) These countries mentioned have a democratic trend. Brazil mentions that there was a president that promised to help the citizens. Guatemala has a judge and jury that that sentence the wrong of the pervious dictator. The Bahamas also goes on to talk about how they are making sure that illegal betting online is being banded. This is occurring because of the voting that is democratic.
    C) The quote “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." is correct. Government should create a society where people aren’t suffering. Also they should make sure that society is prospering in order to make sure that things are running smoothly. Government should make sure that people feel that they are going to have the security that is needed. This is what I believe that Government should be doing for not only themselves but for their citizens that will help them obtain what they want.
    D) I feel that no Government is perfect but it tries its best to make sure that they at least can help. In Brazil we see how they are trying to get their government to help them prosper. Also we see in Guatemala how they are trying to stop the corrupt nation in making sure justice is being done. These Governments are trying to turn around and make sure that everything is in peace and that their people will also be safe.

A.) In this news brief, there are many mentions of political systems or concepts in action. In Egypt this past week, “Clashes between opponents of Egypt’s Islamist government and the security forces left at least 50 people dead”, which suggest that Egypt is a theocracy of some sort. It also mentions in the news brief that “Australia’s prime minister, Julia Gillard, set September 14th as the date for an election”, inferring that they have a parliamentary democracy. Lastly as stated, “A bipartisan group of senators unveiled its far-reaching proposals and Barack Obama presented a competing set of ideas …” is a substantial example of why the United States is a presidential democracy.

B.) The top political news this week reflects several political trends such as government reform, individual/human rights and modernization that are occurring around the world There is much turmoil in the Middle East as Egypt, a transitional democracy and Syria, a dictatorship are dealing with internal issues in their government and undergoing serious change. They’re modernizing their government practices and not all citizens of those countries are particularly pleased with it. Citizens of France were protesting for the legalization of gay marriage shortly before the national assembly began discussing the possibility of it. After a devastating fire in Brazil, the president vows to improve fire-safety standards. Both the Czech Republic and Australia are taking steps toward a more equalized government where for the first time the Czech Republic’s president was elected solely on direct popular vote and the Australian prime minister has set a fair date for the election so the best candidate could win. Throughout the world, countries are changing in many political and social ways which all seem mostly for the better and for the people.

C.) Drew Western once said “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." This quote basically means that the government, who is the most effective, is one who creates prosperity, protects its people and provides a means for education, leaving a better life for future generations. I find this quote to be very accurate in my views on the purposes the government withholds. The government’s sole role is to serve the people and provide stability and aids. A government is not meant to constantly intervene in the matters of economics or social issues. However, it should regulate economic activities so there are no corrupt practices and safeguard or protect all human/individual rights reserved for the people. It’s crucial for a government to do so, but often much at times, it is difficult to uphold these duties due to many distinguishing factors in the nation or even the world.

D.) To an extent, some, not all, governments in the modern world are indeed fulfilling their roles and duties. In France, parliament is in talks about possibly legalizing gay marriage, a social right people are calling for, not only in France but all over the world. Czech Republic, Australia and Japan are ongoing examples of what the role of the government should be in people’s lives in the way that people are directly voting for their president, more elections are taking place and Japan has decided to increase its military spending by 0.8% , another step towards protecting their people against outside threats. Other countries in such as China or North Korea still face a communist government in which Chinese hackers have infiltrated the New York Times website over financial issues, trying to keep a cover over their communist society. Many countries have taken the primary step into fulfilling their roles/duties in government by allowing fair elections, distributing individual rights and protecting the safety of their people. However some countries still remain at the back of the bandwagon, holding onto other ideologies that provide for no real prosperity or protection for its people.

  32. A&B) After reading over Politics this week in the Economist I realized how every nation has its own political system, and how these systems shape there development. I read about the lethal fire in Brazil, which killed over 235 people in a night club in Santa Maria. Fire safety standards are now being created and increased by the Brazilian President, therefore I was able to infer Brazil is a federal republic due to the presence of a President in the country. In Guatemala a judge ordered Efraín Ríos Montt, the country’s military dictator in 1982 to 1983, to stand trial on charges for his crimes against humanity for the killing of 1,771 Mayans during his reign. After reading this I inferred that Guatemala was also a republic due to its presence of a President, who is standing by this order, however it could also be considered a transitional democracy because the nation is still in the process of recovering after a genocide. Finally I was able to infer that Australia has a Parliamentary Democracy, since prime minister Julia Gillard, set September 14th as the date for an election to determine legislature within Australian government. C) I believe that the quote, “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” is a pretty accurate description of what the purposes of government should be. In my opinion, however I believe the purpose of government is to also create order within society while giving its citizens a say in who creates this order. I also like the fact that this quote mentions children, because they hold the future of the world in there hands, and the political systems they have grown up living under. D) Based on these articles I think that the governments I read about are maintaining and improving their roles and duties within their political systems. For example, in Australia, the parliamentary democracy allows citizens to have a say in how their country is run and who runs it, causing little controversy and political turmoil within the country compared to a country like Egypt which is very distraught. As mentioned before Brazil is recovering after a massive fire taking the life's of many and the country is learning from it and recovering from it, kind of like how America is recovering after the Sandy Hook Massacre, which has caused an increase in school security and talk about gun control laws. Finally, Guatemala’s political system seems to be improving as well since dictatorship is not in place anymore, and the dictator responsible for his crimes within Guatemala is now being punished for them, allowing Guatemala to be one more step towards democracy. Overall I believe the purpose of government is to better itself, and that sometimes tragedy and conflict is necessary in order for nations to learn from it and to do so.

  34. A - In this news article, Brazil, Guatemala, and Antigua shows four government
systems, which are Presidential Democracy, Parliamentary Democracy,
    Dictatorship, and Communism.

B -These three countries were all democratic, and since they were the trends
were alike in many ways. In the Bahamas they ended illegal betting due to voting
which is a democratic process to be done, in Guatemala the jury and a judge
decided on a sentence for the wrong doing of the previous dictator of Guatemala,
and in Brazil was a president who promised to help the country and never went
    through with his word.

C - "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the
many, security for all and a better future for our children," is the perfect
example of an exact purpose of a government. People look up to the governments
wherever they live, and so I feel that the government should always be a step
ahead of their own people. But while maintaining the safeguard for people's
rights they need to start planning for the future, and shape their countries for
    the long run.

    A) In the news brief some of the political systems mentioned were Presidential Democracy (USA) dealing with illegal immigrants , Republic (Brazil) where the president promised to improve fire-safety standards, and Dictatorship (Guatemala 1982-1983) Efrain Rios Montt was a dictator who may be charged on crimes against humanity.
    B) In the United States it mentioned that President Obama wants to make a path for some sort of legal status for illegal migrants. In Brazil there was a fire in a night club that killed 235 people because of the few exists the place had. President Dilma Rousseff promised to improve and enforce fire-safety standards. A judge in Guatemala ordered Efraín Ríos Montt, Guatemala's dictator in 1982-83, to stand trial on charges of crimes against humanity for the killing of 1,771 Mayans during his rule. In different ways these are all examples of leaders or people with authority trying to improve and make a change in a country.
    C) I agree with Drew Westerns idea about the purpose of government. I feel government should provide order in the country and also have the people's best interest in mind. It's not possible to make everyone happy but government should aim to do whats best for the nation.
    D) In the modern world governments try their best to fulfill their roles and make positive change in the country. Barack Obama is trying to also improve border security as well as improve the lives of many people that have been working hard in a country where they hold no legal status. In Brazil President Dilma Roussef is fulfilling her duty because she is planning on improving fire-safety standards which provides security for the people and will prevent another event like the one from the night club from taking place again. In Guatemala the judge is making justice for the killing of the 1,771 Mayans. Although the dictator responsible for the killing of those Mayans was in power over 3 decades ago it goes to show that they don't plan on letting horrible things go by just because of the time that has gone by. This goes to show that the current government in Guatemala wants people to think about their actions and wants to provide security and justice.

    A.)
China is a Republican because the leaders are selected by the popular vote. Egypt was a dictatorship but two years ago there was a revolution that the political system changed, but now the President Muhammad Morsi of Egypt wants it back to a dictator rule. The Czech Republic is a Presidential Democracy political system. It’s just like the United States, where there is one head of state that is elected by popular vote.

    B.)
After reading a couple of articles I realized that The Czech Republic is similar to the United States because they are both a Presidential Democracy political system. I feel that choosing an elected official from the popular vote is very important because it is the fair way. Countries should start electing officials with the popular vote. I also read that it has been reported that China sent hackers to hack into The New York Times computers to cover up maintain a certain image. I think China did wrong here. They not only trespassed, but also stole from The New York Times. I think China and the United States should have a compromise about the news obtained and reported. China and the US have always been allies so working this problem out should not be difficult. Another article I read was about immigration, it talked about President Barack Obama promising “comprehensive reform,” but always forgetting this mission. Now he finally is able to satisfy the needs of immigrants. Many immigrants immigrate to America to find better jobs and some successfully get the citizenship and some don’t. In the United States, we need intelligent people and many new immigrants are really intelligent, so why don’t the government give them a chance to start a new life in the US? I think we should let immigrants in for a limited amount of time, have them go to school, and then send them back to their countries to make their countries better.

    C.)
Yes, I agree with this quote because the government is very important in one’s daily life. The government is supposed to keep a community, nation or state in place. For example, in the article “New York Times ‘hit by hackers from China,” China would only sent in hackers because it probably does not want the NYT to print something that would affect their image. China is a much censored area and cares a lot about the country’s image and that is how the government works. It censors a lot of news on the internet because it is a very protective country, and because of this citizens of China are unaware of some important news. I think a government should always be organized and have answers to the questions asked by the people. They shouldn’t be hiding anything because then the people will lose trust in their government. The government should keep people safe and always provide for the people.

    D.)
In the modern times it would be hard to say if governments were fulfilling their duties because a lot of governments hide the negatives or censor news to the people in their country like China. I think governments that rule with the popular vote are most fair because every citizen then has a chance to vote. The United States for example has three branches of government, Legislative, Executive and Judicial. Each branch has power to not pass a law and I think dividing the power is a better idea than having one person rule the country.

  37. In "Politics this week" (February 2nd, 2013), the news article featured nations with specific political systems and their
news headlines. The first nation that caught my attention was Egypt and its Islamist government, a theocracy. The headlines stated that
riots and security forces left at least 50 people dead in Egypt's major cities. It was easily given that Australia was a parliamentary democracy
because the news article spoke about Australia's Prime Minister and a set date for an election. And the less challenging, more obvious political system written about in the article was the United States. This week the United States senate approved John Kerry's nomination as secretary of state. The United States is a Presidential democracy.

In the reading, the article gives us insight of the massacres taken place in years 1982-1983 in Guatemala. Efrain Rios Montt, an army general
who led Guatemala for 17 months during this dark period, is being charged with genocide. During his 17 month rule, it is clear that Montt
had killed 1,771 lxil people. I can infer that Guatemala's government is stepping up to judicial challenge with this case, being that this crime
had taken place 30+ years ago. Although the trend is not contemporary and has been dated for decades, it seems as if all dictators are ruthless
in their actions and look to mass killings (genocide) during their rule of a nation. It is an odd trend to capture but history illustrates just that
over the years of dictatorship. In the modern world, it seems as though change is happening all around. With governments stepping up to the judicial plate on murder. Brazil had also encountered a horrible tragedy, the killing of 230 people at a night club that was over crowded. Its time for nations to realize that change must be made to prevent tragedies like this for the future.

I believe that the quote, “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children," is similar and almost very true to my opinion of the purpose of government. I believe that the sole purpose of government is to protect its people and safe-guard their rights. Government is the base of a country and its people and it should act as a guide to every day life and protection. Government is a necessity for order, structure and prosperity. Without government there for the people, the people can not prosper, grow, or live a structured life. Government should most definitely be there as security (protection) and also there to design a better future for our children and our children's children as well.

It is obvious that governments are not fulfilling their roles and duties because their citizens are responding in a negative manner. With hundreds dead in Brazil, Egyptian citizens rioting and now having a court case that was long over due, set up now. It is just apparent that government is designed to fail. Sometimes government promises too much for the people to gain their trust. Without trust a government has no muscle behind it because its people are not willing to confine to its rules and boundaries. Over history, civil disobedience has taken place in the United States as well, especially during the Civil Rights movement. In modern day society, acts of violence and protest outbreaks are happening across the globe. Egyptian activist, Gaza protests, middle eastern conflicts, etc. all are taking place because of government not complying with its peoples "wishes" and "demands". Government in a country was created for structure and solely for the peoples benefit, we see very little of that in todays world.

The political systems of Theocracy, Democracy, and Dictatorship are seen in this news brief. Egypt's government is a theocracy since it states in the article that Egypt has an "Islamist government". Their government is influenced partially by religion which makes it a theocracy. The article also talks about our government which is a democracy. It discusses how elected official John Kerry was nominated as the secretary of state. Democracies vote for their leaders in elections. The passage talks about Guatemala where the country's military dictator from 1982 is standing trial for his crimes against humanity. I personally believe that it is the responsibility of any government to protect the rights and freedoms of their citizens. It is also necessary for governments to provide equal opportunities for their people. Governments should also provide structure and order for a country. Governments need to have laws in order to keep society from crumbling and to avoid complete chaos. There must be a fair law system that the government enforces. I believe that many modern governments are doing the best they can in order to be fully functioning and relevant entities of safety and control. There are situations like in China where the government realizes they must step in and do something even if it involves something like the environment. Maintaining a healthy environment should also be a duty of governments. If certain aspects of the environment are harming citizens' health then it should be the duty of the government to protect them and keep their own citizens healthy. This is what I personally believe are the purposes of government.

    A) In the news brief, three political systems were Theocracy in Egypt after the brief said “Islamist government” suggesting religious affiliation to government, Presidential Democracy in the US after Obama pushes forth for the immigration reform to occur within his new term, and Dictatorship in Guatemala during Efrain Montt dictatorship from 1982-1983 who now faces possible charges against humanity.

    B) There are many political trends seen within each news brief such as national unity, immigration reforms, and a former dictator now facing criminal charges from the past. In Egypt the government struggles with switching from a theocracy to a democratic republic. The government of Egypt is in a situation that they cant seem to get out of since it’s a new idea to them. They struggle with keeping control of its people while still being a democratic republic. This can be seen through the violence that is occurring in Egypt and the government struggling to find some type of national unity. In the United States, Obama makes an effort to change legalization of immigrants and makes a priority for immigration reform for his new term. This shows the Presidential democracy and how Obama is taking initiative as President to help with a movement. However, in Guatemala it is evident that Efrain Montt’s past as a dictator is catching up with him now at age 83. He is faced with criminal charges after evidence arose of him killing 1,771 Mayans while in his dictatorship. These trends show how different one nation is from another no matter what resources they share/trade with. Each has their own political and respected views/trends.

    C) “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." This quote means that if a government provides the following, prosperity, security and a future for the next generation it should be considered a good system. I agree with this quote because as long as a government system has the nations people safe and providing for the next generation to continue the chain of prosperity there shouldn’t be a problem. The purpose of a government is to keep a nation in order and within that falls security for individuals and prosperity in their lives/ as a whole. Government is the intermediary to an anti-chaos life style and ordered way of living in prosperity.

    D) I believe that governments in the modern world are fulfilling their duties/ roles. For example, Guatemala being a Republic in the modern world is living up to its political views even with an incident that happened a long time ago. By former dictator Efrain Mott facing criminal charges for the killings that happened during his time as dictator, this shows that government is still strict even if it happened in the 1800s. This is something very big to see that even after a long time has passed, it is still being convicted and brought to court. Guatemala has come a long way from dictatorship to now a Republic.

    A) The political systems discussed in this news brief include Democracy, Parliamentary Democracy and Republic. The United States has a democratic system because in the news brief it states that John Kerry was elected to replace Hilary Clinton as secretary of state. Also, Tom Harkin, a democratic senator, announced that he wouldn’t be running for re-election. The Czech Republic was mentioned because their former prime minister Milos Zeman has just won the presidential election, and this was the first time the president was actually elected by the people. Britain has a parliamentary democracy because it was stated that the council voted against a nuclear waste storage plan.
    B) There were many trends in the news brief, however the biggest one was that many governments are stepping up and doing something. In France, thousands of people were protesting for gay marriage rights, so the assembly met up and discussed passing a bill. The county council in Britain is trying to help the environment by vetoing a bill to store nuclear waste underground. In Ukraine the government finally sentenced a man to life in prison for a murder he committed in 2000. Lastly, in the Czech Republic the citizens finally got to choose their own leader through popular vote.
    C) A government needs to be unique and fitting to each of its citizens. People in the United States and people in Cuba have totally different living conditions. The US is a democracy while Cuba is a dictatorship, however the people in each region seem to be happy. A government might work wonders in one place, yet completely destroy a different place. The purpose of government is to fit the needs of the people short term and locally rather than be universal.
    D) Many governments around the world are fulfilling their roles. The government in the Czech Republic finally caved and gave the people what they wanted, and they elected a leader in which they saw fit to rule. The same concept applies to the United States. Although not everyone likes and voted for our president the majority did, which means the majority view him as fit enough to rule our country properly. The French assembly is talking about passing bills for allowing gay marriage, and the British county council is trying to preserve our environment. Each of these places have a different type of government however it’s the right government to fit the unique needs of the different countries.

    A) In this news brief many political systems were mentioned. Three of them being Parliamentary Democracy, Dictatorship, and Presidential Democracy. Parliamentary Democracy is held in Australia because they have a prime minister, Julia Gillard, who set September 14th as the date for an election. Dictatorship was held in Guatemala because Efrain Rios Montt had all the power to cruelly kill Mayans in 1982-1983. Presidential Democracy is held in Czech Republic because they received a president in their election for the first time by popular vote.

    B) Political trends in the modern world seem to be attempts to improve each nation. In Australia their prime minister, Julia Gillard, announced their election date 7 months early. She feels that giving the nations such an early warning will allow them to successfully plan out their year they way this wish too. In Guatemala, prosecutors are preparing charges against Mr. Rios Montt for killing 1,771 Mayans 30 years ago. Under his dictatorship in 1982 and 1983, 15 massacres have been filed for the worst butchery. This trial shows that Guatemala is attempting to improve its awful record for impunity. Hopefully they will be able to receive the justice they deserve, due to their firm grip on crime. In Czech Republic their former prime minister won the presidential election. This was the country’s first president that was elected by direct popular vote. Allowing the people to have more of a say in the government.

    C) I would have to agree with Drew Western when he said, "The measure of a government is wether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I feel that a government should care for it’s people. It is their responsibility to keep our country safe and to protect the rights that we rightfully own. Our children are our future, so I feel that it is very important for the government to provide a stable environment for them to successfully take our places and keep our country safe.

    D) I feel that many governments in the modern world are attempting to fulfill their roles/duties. As I mentioned before, Guatemala once was ruled by a dictator, Efraín Ríos Montt. Now 30 years later, they are putting him on trial for his cruel actions during the years of his dictatorship. He was the reason why 1,771 Mayans have passed away. Guatemala is attempting to improve their government, starting with punishing Montt for all his wrong-doings, allowing them to improve its awful record for impunity. Their justice system now has a firmer grim on crimes that have been committed and are finding ways to deal with each of them. “The case against Mr Ríos Montt will be the biggest test yet of whether Guatemalan justice is up to the enormous challenges it faces.” This shows that they are at least attempting to improve their government and plan on fulfilling their rightful roles/duties.

  42. A) One political part in the article was the system that we use in the United States, Presidential Democracy where candidates are sworn in by popular vote. Another system is Dictatorship in Guatemala with one ruler having absolute power. Finally in the U.K. parliamentary Democracy with a group of officials works together.
B)One of the trends today in the modern world is that more and more country's are starting to become democracy's, probably because of the U.S influence on many country's.
C)The role of government is to provide for the ones they govern and to make sure that they are protected, served and feel protected this is what government should be doing for the people.
D)I fell that some country's are becoming more and more dependable and fulfilling their roles, in America our rate of freedom is slowly decreasing.

a.) This news article focuses on many government systems, such a s China which is based on communism, America which focuses on presidential democracy and then Australia which is a monarchy.
b.) There are many political trends presented in this article. Countries have different views which cause different solutions and political trends. This article showed how violence was caused by disagreements. It also represents another side of political views by residency and people have the chose to choose who gets power and some countries don’t have that power. Different political views offer different power to citizens.
c.) The purpose of a government is to satisfy its citizens and do what is best for their country. A government is supposed to choose the best solution for their problem. The main focus is to enforce laws and offer a sense of protection over the population.
d.) Governments are slowly beginning to fill their role but not all of them. Many countries are still hurting and many aren’t as stable as they should be. But many governments are doing their part and aren’t taking advantage of their power and have learned to consider other’s needs.

    A) In "Politics This Week", several political systems and concepts are spoken about. Three of them are Theocracy, Dictatorship, and Democracy. Egypt's government is a theocracy because it is influenced by the Islam religion. A theocracy is a Government that is run by religious officials or religious law. An example of a dictatorship is also given in the article. Guatemala had a military dictator in 1982 who was forced to face trial for his crimes against humanity. A dictatorship is when a single person is the leader of a society. The article also speaks about how John Kerry was nominated as the secretary of state. In a democracy, officials are elected by the people of the nation in elections.

    B) The political trends in this article are human rights and government reform. Protesters in France protested for the legalization of gay marriage, just before the national assembly began discussing it. Czech Republic's President was elected by popular vote. Governments are changing for the better, people are beginning to have a voice in their government all around the world.

    C) Drew Western once said “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." I agree with this quote. My opinion is that Government should maintain economic stability and ensure the possibility of prosperity for all citizens. People should also be protected, and the future for children should be thought about and improved.

    D) Governments in the modern world are fulfilling their roles/duties. However, not all Governments are doing so, and the ones that are, are not necessarily fulfilling all of their roles/duties. The Government in France is considering legalizing gay marriage. Gay marriage is something the people of France are striving for, hopefully their government will not let them down. Czech Republic has taken a step towards democracy by holding elections for public officials. Popular vote determines who the leaders of the Czech society will be. An example of a government that is not fulfilling its roles is the Korean Government. Korea is still a communist government that gives its people only what is necessary and does not allow for prosperity, or for people to "follow their dreams." Some Governments are doing what they should, some are not.

  46. A) While reading the article, “Politics This Week”, three different political systems were recognized: China and its totalitarianism, Japan’s Monarchy, and America’s presidential democracy. China is a totalitarian government because they have a lot of pollution and need to shut down factories to reduce the pollution. Japan is a monarchy and is increasing its spending on defense to protect its people. America is a presidential democracy and is moving toward immigration reform.
    B) The political news this week reflects political trends. These trends help the government protect its nation, its people, and create reforms. China is shutting down factories to eliminate the pollution and make its people healthier and reduce sickness. Japan is trying to protect its people and homeland by increasing their spending on defense. The United States of America is working on reform on immigration to figure out a legal status for illegal immigrants.
    C) New York Times columnist Drew Western wrote that "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children." This quote is true in that it is the government’s duty to protect its people and allow them to live their lives as they wish. The government should be able to keep its promises to its people in order to maintain stability and support. Many people are dependent on their government to give them educational training, human rights, and protection of rights. All these are important qualities for citizens and have effect on all generations.
    D) Most governments are able to fulfill their roles while others are not. China, Japan, and America are all taking steps in order to protect and help their citizens. China wants its people healthy, Japan is working on keeping their people safe, and America wants to allow more people experience a good life. Although many governments fulfill their duties, others may not. For example, North Korea (communists government) promise fairness between all its people, but there is a major lack of fairness in it’s people’s rights and freedom.

    A) the news brief mentioned several nations that each were a part of different political systems. One that came up was presidental democracy USA were dealing with illegal immigrants.another was a china, being republican because leaders are selected by popular votes. egypt is considered a theocracy because it states in the article "egypt has an islamist goverment."

    B) in the passage many conflicts have stirred up throughout all nations which showed many political trends.Egypt had clashes between Islamist government and the security forces left at least 50 people dead in the cities of Cairo, Suez. The president of Egypt Muhammad Morsi called for unity. Also In China, the Chinese government has prompt the closure of several factories temporarily to resume flights. another article that stood out to me was that brazil president vow to improve safety standards.

C)The quote “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” means that the government can judge it self by its progression. the progression can be through wealth, power safety or improvements on nations. i agree with this quote because i believe the government should have its focus on the people which will eventually improve government tactics.

D)i believe many governments are not fulfilling their roles in their nations. if they were our nations will be in a utopia were their are no negative aspects.everyone will have what they want and there will be no poverty only equality, but for mostly all nations that is a dream or a long term goal. egypt is an example of corrupt goverment. there are pros and cons to the nations but doesn't seem they will be ever balanced out. theocracy falls under one religion which is good for majority of the nation but upset others who want to practice freedom of speech and religion. i believe all nations should have boundaries but all should some elasticity which were people can have a choice.

In the news brief there are a bunch of stories that explain what is
going on in the world recently. While reading, one can easily identify
the differences in how the countries highlighted in the articles are
run. In the article about the conflict in Egypt one can identify that
the government or the president is trying to create a theocracy within
the nation. In the article about Obama’s immigration efforts one can
tell that America is a presidential democracy, since the article
briefly describes how the process of getting any new immigration laws
passed is difficult since more than just the presidents approval is
required. Another example of the different political systems shown in
the article is in the story about the conflict between Syria and
Israel. Syria is a theocratic nation. In my opinion modern day
governments are definitely not fulfilling their roles as governments.
I feel this way because when we have nations such as Egypt and Syria
who are in constant internal conflict within the nation, then
obviously something is wrong. A governments role is to provide and
protect its citizens, and create some level of prosperity, if this is
non existent and the nations people are not happy then a government is
    not doing its job .

    A) In the news brief, three political systems were Presidential Democracy in the US after Obama pushes forth for the immigration reform to occur within his new term. The second thing mentioned was that in Egypt this past week, “Clashes between opponents of Egypt’s Islamist government and the security forces left at least 50 people dead”, which suggest that Egypt is a theocracy of some sort. And the third political system mentioned in the news article was the Czech Republic and how In the Czech Republic their president for the first time has been elected by the nations popular vote which recognizes them as a presidential democracy. From what I read many conflicts had stirred up in many nations.

    B) In this article it spoke about politics that were going on during that week it spoke about many different countries and what was going on in their government. The political news this week that was given, had reflected political trends. Those trends had helped the government protect its nation, its people, and help create reforms. Citizens of France were protesting for the legalization of gay marriage shortly before the national assembly began discussing the possibility of it. After a devastating fire in Brazil, the president vows to improve fire-safety standards. And the Czech Republic's government seems to be taking a more democratic turn as Milos Zeman was elected by direct popular vote. This was the first time the country's president had been elected by this direct vote. Throughout the world, countries are changing in many political and social ways which all seem mostly for the better and for the people.

    C) The quote that was previously mentioned reflects my views for the purpose of a government. If a government provides security and a better future for everyone, it will provide for continual progress, which is essential for achievement and success.

    D) Based on these resources, I believe that governments in the modern are fulfilling their duties. Although some county’s are in turmoil, like Egypt where adversaries of Egypt‘s Islamic government are clashing; they are still working to settle their feuds in order to preserve their states from collapsing. As seen in France as of recently, the legalizing of same-sex marriage has been predicted to pass because it will contribute to a better future. The author of the article says that many young people see the legalization of same-sex marriage as commonsense. Only time will tell if people and government can coexist together and work out their problems.

  51. A) Identify at least three political systems and concepts in action in this news brief.
Three political systems and concepts in action in this new brief were presidential democracy, constitutional monarchy, and a transitional democracy. The United States is described as a presidential democracy, which is a government ruled by the people through elected officials. Head of state is directly elected by popular vote. The Bahamas is described as a constitutional monarchy, which is a form of government in which a monarch acts as the head of state within the constitution written. Egypt is described as a transitional democracy, which is a nation in the process of becoming a democracy, usually in the aftermath of war or political revolution.

    b) Provide a summary of that you read identifying some political trends in the modern world.
During my reading of Politics this Week, from the Economist, international political trends were discussed about in the modern world. The article begins with the explanation of Egypt’s Islamist government and the security forces, which in the brutal clash left at least 50 people dead. In the last decade, a trend is seen in Egypt, as the country transitions from a monarchy to a transitional democracy. Immigration has also lead to some political trends internationally, taking the United States for example. According to the article, a federal appeals court in Washington ruled that Obama acted unconstitutionally by bypassing the Senate when the chamber was in recess to appoint three people to the National Labour Relations Board. By not permitting by the laws of the constitution, it shows distinction in the United States laws.

    c) Reflect on the quote italicized above and the essential question of our first unit: What is the purpose of government? (Your opinion is required here)
The quote "The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children" means that the government’s purpose is to provide the countries’ citizens with the support and resources they need to become and fulfill success in their lives. The government’s purpose is to also create a fair and unconstitutional environment for their country.

    d) Based on these resources, are governments in the modern world fulfilling their roles/ duties? Explain your answer with specific examples. (This is an analytical question, you will need to take and assert your own opinion drawing on our class work last week and prior knowledge.)
Based on the articles that I read, most governments in the modern world are not fulfilling their roles/duties in their countries. Governments for example are the governments in Singapore, which wants to increases the population but 30% in an already over-populated country, South Koreas, which is using satelittes which suggest the construction of a nuclear ballistic missile, and the United States, who passed a law that goes again their constitution.

In the news brief many nations were brought to attention, the US, France and Brazil. They are of presidential democracies. In France there protest for Pro-gay marriage and rallies to support a bill to be passed. In Guatemala a military dictator is being held responsible for crimes against humanity during war.
The article shows us many examples of government in the works from bill passing to the courtroom and the handling of protest. Based on the resourcing provided I believe the government in the modern world is doing its role. The government in the nations from the article seems to be doing what is right to ensure safety of its people. It is letting them speak freely and try to pass laws and bill such as to allow gay marriage.

  53. This article summarizes countries and the political system, along with the current news of events currently happening with them. The article gives the reader ideas of what type of government each government currently has. Italy is a parliamentary democracy because there is a prime minister who is head of the elected government. Another government system is Brazil and the government system is a presidential democracy. With the President Dilma Rousseff, in the article he promised to change the safety and regulations. Australia has a parliamentary democracy because in the article it says that the prime minister is being elected soon. The article mostly discusses the political reforms going on through many countries in the world along with rights for the individuals. Some political trends are In Brazil’s most lethal fire in 50 years, 235 people died when a blaze started in a packed nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria. This is a trend because there is violence around the world. After reading the quote, I believe the purpose of government is to lead the country to prosper. A government is not to take control of a country but guide and set laws for the good of the people. Government should be concerned with safety of the people before everything. Also the government is responsible for making the future better for the coming generations. Without government, a country would be lost, have no direction, and is likely to fail. Without taking too much control and abusing power the government needs to provide stability and help to the people. I agree with the quote and believe that the government is to basically help the people. Governments today are trying to fulfill their duties as government for their people. There is no government that is perfect and completely does everything correct for their country, but most are completing most of their duties. All government systems have the positive and negative aspects to them and it depends on whose point of view it is coming from. Most governments are able to provide security and protection to their people. Without including the governments that are corrupted, many governments are fulfilling their duties.

  54. In this weeks new brief various nations were discussed for the events that happened during this week. A lot of the nations had different political systems. Brazil had a club packed with people and it caught fire killing 235 people. This was actually one of their biggest fires in the past 50 years. The president Rousseff made a deal to fix the fire safety standards. Brazil is a Presidential democracy because the president was elected by popular vote. Also in the Czech Republic is a presidential democracy because popular vote was used as well. In Australia they have a parliament democracy because they have an prime minister.A prime minster is appointed through parliament and not the citizens in that specific country.

The political trend in the world is aimed toward the elections and improvements to each nation.France is inquiring on same sex marriage, Brazil is fixing fire safety laws and the Czech Republic new president was elected through popular vote. The quote “The measure of a government is whether it helps create prosperity for the many, security for all and a better future for our children,” is true .I feel like this is true because for government to play its role correctly they must ensure protection of the people.Children should be prepared for a better future because they are the people that will be next up in or generation dominating everything. One example from the news brief that works best with my idea of government being in charge of protection of people is the club fire in Brazil. This connects to my quote analysis because when government took control of the situation they set new standards for the fire precautions
